Synchronized Flash graphics
By using vector-based technology from Macromedia Flash, we are able to provide much more dynamic and interesting graphics than other tools such as Power Point. These slides are essentially the equivalence of exhibits out of a textbook. Except now they can change and literally show through animation how the numbers and transactions work. With as many 1300 slide changes per lesson, the students really see and understand how accounting works.

Instructional Psychology
Professor Norm Nemrow and our award-winning Center for Instructional Design, located here on our campus, worked closely for several years and invested nearly $300,000 in designing what we think is one of the best instructional technology products available today. We combined traditional learning techniques with new technology to help the student learn faster and retain information longer. We do this through involving more senses, engaging the student with interactivity, reinforcement through integrated problems, and much more.

The strength of any instructional technology product (regardless of how advanced the technology is) is predicated upon the quality of the instruction. Professor Norm Nemrow came to Brigham Young University about 13 years ago after retiring as the President of one of the largest real estate companies in the nation. Norm now volunteers his time at BYU and is the head faculty member over the introductory accounting courses. Professor Nemrow has received many awards including the BYU Best Overall Teacher of the Year Award in 1997 and 1998. Professor Nemrow brings a creative teaching style that connects with all kinds of students. He is able to take difficult accounting principles and transform them into easily understood concepts. Additionally, his experience as former business owner brings added insight as he shows how to apply accounting concepts to real-world business applications.

Technology Platform
To build the recent 2.0 version of CDs, we utilized Microsoft’s newest programming platform called .NET. This technology provides enhanced stability and tight integration with Windows XP and other emerging technologies.

One of the problems that have plagued instructional technology since its inception back in the mid 90’s was the inability to navigate to necessary information quickly. We built several tools into our interface that allows students to find the information extremely fast as if they were flipping through the pages of book. Homework Problems
One of the most innovative aspects of our technology, and one of the main focuses of our U.S. patent, is how we present homework problems. One of the learning obstacles in a traditional course occurs when the instructor teaches a given topic and then assigns accompanying homework problems, which are typically due at the beginning of the next class period. Often, even good students wait several days just before the assignment is due to accomplish the assignment. If we assume better learning takes place when homework problem reinforcement occurs just following the content dissemination, then the traditional homework model is inefficient and an obstacle to enhanced learning. Furthermore, the students often forget how to accomplish the homework because the content explanation is not fresh in their minds.

This really is not the fault of the instructor. There is simply not enough time in class to routinely teach a given topic, present a problem, have the students work through the problem, and then go over the problem as a class and make sure everyone knows how to find the solution (especially if the class has several hundred students). This scenario is just not reasonable given available resources and the amount of content that the instructor must cover throughout the course.

We went to great lengths in the development of our CDs to solve this problem. As a student watches the CDs, they learn about a given topic for several minutes. Upon completion of the topic, the CDs immediately present the student with a homework problem. The CDs ask the student to pull out a sheet of paper and work through the problem. This immediate reinforcement promotes higher retained learning, learning comprehension, and learning efficiency.

Additionally, and perhaps the best aspect of our homework technology is, students can choose varying levels of assistance through our Hint & Walk Through features. The Hint is for students who cannot quite get the problem started and just needs a little guidance to get moving in the right direction. The Walk Through is a thorough step-by-step explanation of how to solve the problem.

There are several benefits of how we present these homework problems. Students who understand the homework can move quickly to the next topic in the CDs and those students that are struggling a bit can access more assistance. Additionally, students now have a great resource when studying for exams; they can replay these walk throughs as many times as they need. Supplemental Learning tools
Glossary: Included in the CDs is an enhanced Glossary with hyperlink functionality. This glossary is much more extensive than a standard glossary. Practice Problems Module: This is a brand new module just released in our latest version. This module allows students to access more practice problems.

We have also developed a new installation module that automatically scans the student’s computer and installs every necessary piece of software with just few clicks of the mouse. A typical student can install our software and be ready to start the course in about 2-3 minutes.

The price of the CD sets is $109 per student (we often can offer discounts to students if the instructor first contacts us). That’s less than half the cost of a textbook. We only charge for the CD sets— everything else we offer is free, including exams, quizzes, consultation services, Etc.

We have made tremendous strides over the last year in making our CDs very stable and virtually error free. However, if a student encounters a technical problem they have the option of using a easy to use diagnostic tool that automatically scans their computer and sends our support team a diagnostic report of the student’s system. We can scan the report, usually find the solution within a few seconds, and respond back to the student very quickly. Additionally, the students can call our support team on our toll-free number. Our goal is to divert all technical support questions away from the instructor so as they can focus more on their students and the course content.

Other resources
Included in the CDs are PDF lesson note documents that contain the main slides seen throughout each lesson. We suggest to the student they print these documents and take notes as they watch the CDs.
